  6. This document covers various topics concerning system configuration
  7. issues and other topics which are not covered by the program command
  8. information given in the "BBEdit Lite Quickstart" file.

  11. System Requirements
  12. ------ ------------
  13. BBEdit Lite now requires System 7.0 or later in order to operate
  14. correctly. System 7.1 or later is required for use of Macintosh Drag and
  15. Drop, and use of System 7.5 or later is recommended.

  18. "Can't Purge a Locked Block" Message
  19. ------ ----- - ------ ------ -------
  20. If you get this message from BBEdit Lite when starting up, your machine 
  21. is probably infected with the MDEF-B virus (or a variant). You should
  22. obtain and run a virus utility (such as Disinfectant) without delay, as
  23. other applications on your machine are most likely infected as well.

  26. Desktop File Problems
  27. ------- ---- --------
  28. On occasion, you may find that the Finder does not display the correct
  29. icon for BBEdit documents, or that you cannot drag documents onto the
  30. BBEdit application (or an alias to the application) to open them.
  31.  
  32. This behavior is not indicative of a problem with BBEdit; rather, it is
  33. an indication that the database that the Finder uses to associate
  34. applications, icons, and documents (known as the "Desktop file") has
  35. become confused or corrupted.
  36.  
  37. When this happens, it is usually desirable to force the Finder to rebuild
  38. the Desktop. To do this, reboot your machine, and immediately hold down
  39. the Shift key until the message "Extensions Off" appears. As soon as
  40. this message appears, release the Shift key, and hold down the Command
  41. and Option keys. For each volume that mounts at startup, the Finder
  42. will ask whether you wish to rebuild the Desktop. Click "OK", and the
  43. Finder will do so.

  46. Memory Usage
  47. ------ -----
  48. BBEdit uses System temp memory to hold the files it opens, so you will
  49. not need to increase the application's partition size to edit large
  50. files. However, some operations, such as Copy and Paste on large blocks
  51. of text, or performing a multi-file search over many files and folders,
  52. may require that more memory be made directly available to the
  53. application. If you often perform tasks like these, we recommend that
  54. you increase BBEdit's recommended memory size allocation to 750K or
  55. more, as your needs dictate.

  58. "Can't Undo" Alerts
  59. ------ ----- ------
  60. A number of actions, most notably many extensions, are not undoable.
  61. As a matter of course, BBEdit will pose an alert: "<action> is not
  62. undoable. Do you still wish to proceed?" If these alerts annoy you,
  63. you can turn them off. The appropriate option is in the Editor section
  64. of the "Preferences" dialog. (The "Preferences..." command is found 
  65. under the Edit menu.)

  68. Printing with Substituted Fonts
  69. -------- ---- ----------- -----
  70. Because of idiosyncracies in the LaserWriter driver 7.1 and earlier,
  71. there are some character spacing anomalies when printing with a
  72. substituted monospaced font (i.e. Monaco). To avoid these problems,
  73. print in a non-substituted, monospaced PostScript font such as Courier.
  74. (With BBEdit, you can of course edit in one font, and print in
  75. another.)

  77. These problems may have been resolved in version 8.1.1 or later of the
  78. LaserWriter driver. Some problems may remain when using non-PostScript
  79. printers (e.g. StyleWriters or DeskWriters).

  82. Fractional Spacing
  83. ---------- -------
  84. BBEdit 3.5 supports a "Fractional Spacing" option when printing. We
  85. recommend that you use this option if you are printing in a small
  86. (less than 9-point) font size.

  89. FaxSTF "FaxPrint" Printer Driver
  90. ------ ---------- ------- ------
  91. Version 2.2.3 of the "FaxPrint" printer driver, supplied with the FaxSTF
  92. fax software package, has a bug in it which can cause all applications,
  93. not just BBEdit, to malfunction. STF Technologies has been notified of
  94. the problem. In the meantime, to avoid potential problems, choose another
  95. printer driver, such as the ImageWriter or LaserWriter driver, except
  96. when you are planning to fax documents directly from within BBEdit.
  97. Contact STF Technologies for the latest information on the availability
  98. of a fix. (As of the writing of this note, FaxSTF has been updated
  99. to version 3.0.)

  102. LaserWriter "Preferences Damaged" Warning
  103. ----------- --------------------- -------
  104. On occasion, version 8.2.2 of the LaserWriter driver will issue a
  105. warning message about missing or damaged preferences. We have contacted
  106. Apple regarding this issue, and they believe it to be due to a bug in
  107. the LaserWriter driver. We have also had reports that the LaserWriter
  108. 8.3 drivers may exhibit this same problem. If you get this message,
  109. simply choose "Page Setup" or "Print" from the File menu, and you should
  110. be able to continue without any difficulty.

  113. NOW Utilities
  114. --- ---------
  115. Older versions of Super Boomerang have a bug which affects BBEdit;
  116. in particular, you cannot type upper-case letters in the "Save As..."
  117. dialog. This bug is fixed in version 4.0 and later of the NOW Utilities
  118. package; contact Now Software for an update.
  119.  
  120. Now Save causes BBEdit's "File" menu to get scrambled. To avoid this,
  121. turn off Now Save when running BBEdit.

  124. Standard File Hacks
  125. -------- ---- -----
  126. There are some third-party extensions which modify the standard "Open"
  127. and "Save" dialogs (known colloquially as "Standard File"). In a couple
  128. of known cases, some of these extensions have a bug which causes
  129. correctly written applications to crash. Specifically:
  130.  
  131. -    "Click, there it is!", version 1.0.1. Version 1.0.4 is current, and
  132.     fixes this problem. Registered owners should contact the author for
  133.     more information.
  134.     
  135. -    Quickeys version 2.1 also appears to have a similar problem.
  136.  
  137. If either of these extensions is installed, BBEdit will most likely
  138. crash when trying to bring up a Standard File dialog. (BBEdit's "Open"
  139. and "Save" dialogs should work correctly, but other dialogs, such as 
  140. the File Types section of the preferences dialog, will not.)
  141.  
  142. In addition, problems have been reported in which the Standard File
  143. Package crashes, or BBEdit takes an "emergency exit", when Peter
  144. Lewis' "CDIconKiller" extension is in use.
  145.

  147. The BalloonWriter INIT
  148. --- ------------- ----
  149. Version 1.0.1 of Apple's "BalloonWriter" extension interferes with
  150. the correct display and operation of BBEdit's dynamic menus. To avoid
  151. this conflict, disable or remove BalloonWriter from your system.

  155. --- ------------ ------ -------
  156. BBEdit was written with libraries which are part of the Programmer's
  157. Editor Package. The PE Package provides high-performance text editing,
  158. searching, directory search, and pattern-match capabilities for use
  159. in text-manipulation programs. For more information, contact us by one
